Back to the leather helmet.
Habiendo hecho la parte más difícil que es dar forma a la parte superior, solo faltaría añadir la parte frontal y la parte posterior del casco.
Having done the hardest part wich was giving shape to the upper part, what's left to be done is the front and the back part of the helmet.
Para la pieza frontal he decidido hacer una máscara muy de fantasía. Quería un casco con un frontal muy protegido, que tapase la cara entera.
El resultado... bueno quizás se hayan aparecido en mi mente oscuros deseos sadomasoquistas, dejaremos que los psicólogos lo decidan.
For the front piece, I decided to make a very fantasy mask. I wanted a helmet with a very protected front side, wich would cover all the face.
The result... well maybe in my mind had appeared some dark sadomasoquist desires, we'll let the psychologists decide that.
Tras recortar la pieza deseada, la presentamos al casco y evaluamos el efecto.
En este punto la máscara está sin cortar y sin haber sido cocida pero ya le hemos hecho los agujeros para respirar por comodidad (es más fácil perforar el cuero cuando está blando).
After cutting the desired piece, we present it to the helmet, and check for the result.
On this point the mask is uncutted, and unboiled, but the holes for breathing are already done (it's easiest to drill the leather when it's soft).
Para darle un efecto de curva en la nariz, recorté la máscara a la altura de los ojos y bajé la línea de visión un par de centímetros. Además esto añade un efecto de maldad al casco.
To shape the mask with a curve effect on the nose, I cutted the mask on the eyes height, and lower the line of vision a couple of centimetres. This also adds a darker impresion on the helmet.
De fondo podemos observar que mis mesas de trabajo son un maldito desastre.
On the back we can see that my working tables are a complete mess.
Cocemos el cuero y lo volvemos a presentar al casco. La máscara se va a quedar fija, había pensado en hacer un visor que subiese o bajase, pero dado su tamaño he decidido que mejor dejarlo fijo.
We boil the leather, and back to present it to the helmet. The mask is going to be steady, I though on having a moving up moving donw viewer, but giving it's size I decided to put it steady.
Retocamos con un cosido inicial las bandas de estructura del casco, para dar aún más forma al casco.
Añadimos dos tiras de cuero para la nuca para que ajuste mejor a la cabeza y añada algo de protección. El concepto es que además sirva para que el casco se pueda levantar y se sujete en la cabeza. Es posible que en el futuro le añada cota de malla en la parte posterior, pero todavía no lo tengo claro.
We retouch the structure strips of the helmet with an inicial sewing, in order to shape the helmet a bit more.
We add to leather strips to the back of the neck, so it fits better and also to add some extra prottection. The idea is that it also can be used to hold the helmet up when you lift it. I may add in the future a chainmail on the back, but I'm not very sure right now.
Remachamos todos los puntos, y le añadimos unas orejeras interiores que serán el sistema de atado del casco.
Finalmente le damos un capa de betún de Judea para proteger el cuero, y ya lo tenemos, el casco terminado, para ser el primero estoy bastante contento con el resultado y ya ocupa un lugar de honor en mi panoplia.
We rivet everything, and add two interior earflaps that will be the tieing system of the helmet.
Finally we add "Betún de Judea" (bitumen) to protect the leather, and there it is, the helmet finished, and even for the first one I've donde I'm pretty happy with it, and now it's on a place of honor on my panoply.
